Shadow Tower
A harsher sibling, not a numbered sequel
Japan released Shadow Tower on 25 June 1998. North America followed on 23 November 1999. It is PlayStation, FromSoftware, and first person, which is why it gets filed next to King's Field. It is not King's Field V. The system rejects the King's Field loop in specific ways: killing a monster adds fixed attributes instead of experience points, equipment has durability, the dungeon has no music in the accounts I read, there is no automap, and the shield does nothing until you raise it. Those are the differences I would want in a buying decision.
HowLongToBeat's displayed estimate is 14.5 hours main, 17.5 with extras, 21.5 complete, from 15 reports. GameRankings 49 is the old aggregate the encyclopedia repeats. Kota Hoshino is the composer credited there. A PlayStation 2 follow-up, Shadow Tower Abyss, stayed in Japan. I do not have a modern re-release to send you to.
King's Field gives you a sword that grows and a kingdom with names. Shadow Tower gives you a tower that eats your shield. If that trade appeals, it is the closer cousin than Lunacid, and it is still its own series. The comparison table of newer games is here.
What I will not claim
I have not found a current official port. Eternal Ring received a PlayStation 4 emulation listing. Shadow Tower did not, in the store checks behind this guide. Community videos, including the one on this page, are reviews, not patches.
The King's Field play order does not insert this tower between 1996 and 2001. Leave it beside the path. Play order stays four main games.

FAQ
Is Shadow Tower a King's Field game?
No. It is a separate FromSoftware series that plays like a crueler cousin.
When did the US version release?
23 November 1999. Japan was 25 June 1998.
Does it have music?
The accounts I used say the dungeon is silent. I am not upgrading that to a technical spec.
