This order favors a clear entry point, then distinctive exploration, then historical interest. It is an editorial recommendation rather than a vote or an official ranking. Use the column buttons to sort; follow a game for the Japanese and North American title comparison.

Three different questions

For a first game I recommend The Ancient City. Its PS2 presentation and separate setting make it a useful introduction, while its unhurried combat preserves the series' core. If you prefer an island whose routes gradually connect, choose the 1995 Japanese II, released as King's Field in North America. Neither recommendation removes the need to learn the movement and watch the attack gauge.

For a longer journey through Verdite, consider the 1996 Japanese III, called King's Field II in North America. HowLongToBeat displays main-story estimates of 23 hours for IV, 16.5 hours for Japanese II and 24.5 hours for Japanese III at the review date. These are estimates from one user-report aggregator, not statistical medians or promises of your completion time. The source links below let you inspect the changing samples.

The 1994 Japan-only game is the historical starting point and my fourth choice for someone who wants an accessible first purchase. Its five-floor cemetery is worth considering if you want to see the original design before later iterations. Shadow Tower and Eternal Ring belong in a separate comparison: each has its own systems and neither is a numbered King's Field sequel. FAQ

What should a new player buy?

My first recommendation is The Ancient City on PS2. Choose Japanese II, the US King's Field, if interconnected island exploration matters more to you.

Is there an official ranking?

No. FromSoftware did not publish one. This page separates a starting recommendation from a taste claim.

Where does Shadow Tower fit?

Beside the series, not inside it. It is harsher and it is not numbered as King's Field V.
