King's Field play order

The numbering is not a mistake you can ignore

The 1994 King's Field never left Japan. When the sequel arrived in North America on 14 February 1996, the box dropped the numeral and just said King's Field. The next Japanese game, King's Field III, then shipped in the US as King's Field II. The PlayStation 2 game kept a subtitle instead of a plain number: The Ancient City.

So the question "is King's Field 1 the same as King's Field 2?" is no. The question "is King's Field 2 the same as King's Field 3?" depends on the column you read. In Japanese order they are different games. In US order, King's Field II is the Japanese third game.

Four main games, one table

Japanese King's Field, 16 December 1994, PlayStation, no US title. Japanese King's Field II, 21 July 1995, is the US King's Field of 14 February 1996. Europe is the disputed row: Wikipedia dates a European release to 10 March 1997, while the Fandom series notes say December 1996. I print both and do not average them.

Japanese King's Field III, 21 June 1996, is the US King's Field II of 20 November 1996. No PAL release is recorded for that game. Japanese King's Field IV, 4 October 2001, is The Ancient City. Wikipedia and IGN put the US date on 26 March 2002; Fandom says 25 March 2002. Europe is 28 March 2003 and Australia 28 May 2003.

Where I would start

This order is a recommendation, not a release fact. The Ancient City is the shortest jump for a new player: HowLongToBeat's displayed estimate main story is 23 hours from 30 reports, and it is the only main game on PlayStation 2. After that, the US King's Field (Japanese II, 16.5 hours, n=28) shows the island of Melanat. Then the US King's Field II (Japanese III, 24.5 hours, n=13) opens Verdite above ground. The 1994 five-floor tomb (9.5 hours, n=23) makes the most sense last, once the Forester name means something.

Release order is the other honest path: 1994, then 1995, then 1996, then 2001, using the Japanese titles so you do not skip a game that the US numbering hid. Additional I and II on PSP sit outside both paths. They are Japan-only and have no English script on record.

Read the matching game page before you buy: The Ancient City, 1995 / US King's Field, 1996 / US King's Field II, and the 1994 original.

FAQ

Is King's Field 1 the same game as King's Field 2?

No. The 1994 Japanese game and the 1995 sequel are different discs. The US never numbered the 1994 game at all.

Is the US King's Field II actually King's Field 3?

Yes, if you mean the Japanese third game from 21 June 1996. The US box calls that game King's Field II.

Should I play them in story order?

Story order follows the Japanese releases. A new player can start with The Ancient City and still follow the others later.
