King's Field and Dark Souls
What was actually said
FromSoftware's line, repeated on the Demon's Souls record, is that Demon's Souls is a spiritual successor to King's Field. I have not found a sentence where the company says Dark Souls continues Verdite's calendar. The Moonlight Sword's glow shows up again in later games. Seath's name shows up again. Design habits show up again: a first-person or close camera, a body that gets tired, a maze, and very little guidance. Those are observations. They are not a canon memo.
Combat is the place the comparison fails. King's Field turns slowly, has no dodge roll as people mean it now, and saves rarely. Dark Souls builds a whole vocabulary of dodge rolls, stamina management and recovering dropped souls that these discs do not have. The cleanhit FAQ's "superficial" is the right temperature.
If you want the sword's old numbers, go to Moonlight Sword. If you want the dragon, go to Seath. If you want to know whether a fifth King's Field exists, the answer is no.

FAQ
Are King's Field and Dark Souls the same world?
No official statement says that. The studio called Demon's Souls a spiritual successor to King's Field.
Which is harder?
They are hard differently. King's Field is slow and sparse. Dark Souls is a combat system. I will not crown one.
Does the Moonlight Greatsword start here?
The King's Field sword is the earlier glowing blade. Later games reuse the idea. The attack numbers are not the same.
