FromSoftware and King's Field

A business-software company that shipped a dungeon

FromSoftware was founded on 1 November 1986 and started in business software. King's Field, 16 December 1994, is the first game. The development note says roughly ten people and under six months, after a PC robot-maze idea was dropped for the new PlayStation. The title came from a golf course in Britain. That is the origin, and it is why a search for the name also hits golf clubs and clinics. Those are not this studio. The disambiguation page is King's Field versus Kingsfield.

The next markers I will cite from the company article: Armored Core in 1997, Shadow Tower in 1998, Eternal Ring and Sword of Moonlight in 2000, Demon's Souls in 2009, Dark Souls in 2011. Hidetaka Miyazaki became president in 2014. These releases show where the 1994 dungeon sits in a longer history.

King's Field is the root, not the whole tree. If you came for the discs, start at the game list.
