King's Field on PlayStation 2

One new game, plus the older discs

The Ancient City is the only main King's Field built for PlayStation 2. Japan, 4 October 2001. The US name drops the numeral. Wikipedia and IGN say 26 March 2002; Fandom says 25 March 2002. Europe 28 March 2003, Australia 28 May 2003. A PlayStation 2 also plays the three PlayStation King's Field discs, so one console can hold the whole main line if you own the discs and the regions match.

PlayStation 3 compatibility is the trap. Wikipedia's console article says the launch PlayStation 3 hardware played PlayStation 2 discs, and that the feature was removed when the slim models arrived. A slim PlayStation 3 is not a substitute for a PlayStation 2 if The Ancient City is the disc you care about. PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 do not add this game back.

What the disc asks of you

Metacritic 60 is the published aggregate, via the encyclopedia record. HowLongToBeat's 30 reports put the main path at 23 hours. The cleanhit FAQ says the game has no twin-stick look, five maps that improve as you find them, and two endings tied to the Moonlight Sword. Those are reasons people recommend this disc to a new player, and they are also reasons a PlayStation-trilogy player may find Heladin less connected to Verdite.

Second-hand US complete copies in the eBay summary: 17 sales, mean $103.43, about $55 to $160, with four 2026 sales between $108.93 and $160.02. One aggregator only. If you move the picture to a PC, use PCSX2 and your own BIOS. The game page is The Ancient City.
